New York based singer-songwriter/composer Jeff Wave has been following his own muse for some time now.
As a teenager in suburban Detroit he began playing guitar and bass and singing and writing with various band
situations influenced by rock, jazz, 20th century classical and psychedelic techno. But having suffered all the
tensions and frustrations that often arise in collaborating band experiences, Wave eventually ventured out on a
solo career. He has several recordings of his own semi-pop style of music available on the indie label Zen Pop.
Whether writing an anti-war song such as "Home of the brave?" in response to the American invasion of Iraq
on 2004's Home of the Brave?; or commenting on the meaning of hipness in the Downtown New York music
scene in "Uptown Downtown" or covering the Beatles' "Across the Universe" on 2000's Sleeping Through
a Millennium; or singing older well known standards; or finishing work on a project started years ago, Jeff Wave
has managed to create a small niche in the New York City indie scene.
Just Another Pop Star From Detroit is Wave's latest recording released in early 2006. A mostly keyboard/electronic
oriented work, it has 4 songs with vocals and 3 instrumentals. It started off as a more traditional recording project with
Wave recording basic keyboard and electronic percussion tracks on his portable studio while isolated in a cottage in
northern Michigan. He then went into a studio back in New York adding guitar, bass and a drummer David Brudz.
However, much time was passing between recording sessions: the result of a serious health issue, creative blocks
and malaise resulting from his close following of political events. After having been out of the studio for at least a year,
Wave found out that the studio had closed without a trace, along with his tapes. Not knowing exactly what to do and
just pondering the situation for several more months, he resolved to take the original basic tracks to composer/computer
music engineer Craig Furkas in Los Angeles to see if the project could be finished up. Although several songs ultimately
had to be scratched, enough of the original material was saved to which they then added vocals, more intriguing electronic
sounds, and some keyboard soloing by Craig. All of which then resulted in the release of the new 7-song CD.
